To my new readers (and old ones!): every month I like to do an update on my little peanut girl, Caroline. It’s my moment to indulge in all of her cuteness. If you’re anti-cute things like babies, I’d suggest skipping it. But she’s pretty cute…so maybe you’ll like to read about the fine details of her growth.
Or you can just check back in later for a regular update
August 4, 2013
Water…we know that you’re already a water baby and love the pool, but it’s become apparent through the dog’s water bowl and your baths that you just love water, period. I find you multiple times a day splashing your hand in the dog bowl and sometimes I let you just run your hands under the faucet—you love it!
Reading…if you disappear for a few minutes, chances are that you’re in your room looking through your books. I think it’s so adorable how content you are to just sit on the floor and independently flip through your books—you make a very cute bookworm!
Bubbles…it’s amazing what a few months can do in terms of your reaction to things. When we first blew bubbles with you, you were fairly disinterested. However, now you pump your arms and legs and shriek at the sight of bubbles and try to pop them yourself!
When Da comes home…this is one of the most heart melting things I get to see every day. You speed crawl to the door and yell when you see him. Selfishly, I can’t wait to go to work so I can get some of those “welcome home” greetings myself
Hand treasures…this is one of the most bizarre, yet endearing habits of yours. You love to have something in your hand at all times. I call them your “hand treasures” because you take them everywhere with you and you refuse to let go of them. Your favorites are receipts, tissue paper, napkins, headbands, paper towels. Your strangest hand treasure this month was definitely the can of cat food. Watching you try to crawl with a can of cat food in your hand was hilarious, but it was your “treasure” and you weren’t letting go of it!
“The Duck Song”…Dad found this funny song/video online about a duck that incessantly goes to a lemonade stand asking for grapes. As much as I hate to admit, this song is pretty catchy and you love it. The minute it loads on the computer, you get this big grin on your face and are entranced for the entire three minutes that it plays.
“Being told ‘no’”…your ‘dislikes’ this month can be summed up just like that. When you have an idea or a plan that we interfere with or ruin, you throw quite a sassy temper tantrum. Judging by these little fits, I’m already nervous about what your teenaged years might be like!
You continue to sleep through the night with no problems (God bless you!), but naptimes have been a little more difficult these days. I’m not sure if it’s teething that’s the issue, but it takes you a fair amount of time to get to sleep for a nap. Most days, you’re down to one nap with the occasional day having two naps.
We’re still introducing you to more solid foods because I think you’re starting to really dislike the taste of “baby food.” You’re still getting 4 oz. bottles throughout the day. I’m excited to keep introducing new foods to you. For the most part, you love whatever we give you, but I have to say that your favorite so far is probably pizza! Good choice!
Mom and Dad Update:
Dad had to take a business trip this month to Arkansas and I could tell that you really missed him. Every time we were in the car, you’d yell for him. I love how much you two love one another. His flight got cancelled and he had to be away an extra night and I could tell that it was killing him to be away from you anymore than he had to. Hopefully he doesn’t have to go on anymore trips for a while!
I got my first full-time teaching job this month. I’m really excited, but I’m also very heartbroken to leave you. I know teachers have a family-friendly schedule and if Dad and I work it out correctly, we won’t be away from you too long during the day, but it’s still hard. You are my best friend and I treasure every second I spend with you. Leaving you to go to work WILL be the hardest thing, but I hope you’ll be proud of me.
Milestones or “Firsts”:
Another tooth…your top, front tooth came in! The one next to it is poking through as we speak!
Scrunch your nose…when we ask you “where’s Caroline’s nose?!”
“So big!”…you raise your arms as high as you can when we ask “how big is Caroline?!”
Standing up by yourself…you’ve managed to stand up unassisted for a few seconds before falling down. One step closer to walking—scary!
Going down the slide…you were a little unsure of the whole slide thing, but I think you enjoyed it! I had fun going down with you at least!
Best Moment of the Month:
Not one particular moment, but you’ve been very into giving “cuddles” lately which means that you climb up me or Dad and rest your head on us. We realize that you are more of a toddler than a baby these days so to have you cuddle with us…we can’t get enough of it. I feel like it’s your way of telling us that even though you’re becoming a “big girl,” you still love your mom and dad.
Looking Forward To:
“The big one.” It’s bittersweet to see you turn one year old. On one hand, we love the little girl that you are and how much you learn each day and how you make us laugh. However, on the other hand it’s hard to accept the fact that you’re not the 6 lb 10 oz baby we brought home from the hospital. We can’t wait to celebrate your birthday with our friends and family, but I can guarantee you that Mom and Dad will be crying somewhere in the corner! Can’t you just stay little forever?!
